Is it Time to Move Your Toddler From a Crib to a Bed?

While statistics show that nearly 75% of children under the age of 2 sleep in a crib, by the time that child is 3 years old, the percentage drops to around 35%.

It seems that most children are ready to move to a big-kid (or at least a toddler) bed by the age of 3. But how do you know your little one is ready?

I knew it was time to move my toddler to a crib when I found him hanging from the crib by a foot. He was 21 months. It was a little rough at first for a couple of reasons. First, we had to get him accustomed to sleeping in a new bed (and he dies not like change). Second, because he now has free roam around the house at any time of the day or night. It took about two weeks of consistently taking him back to his bed (every time he got out) to get him back to his "normal" sleeping routine. Now, he rarely fights his nap and sleeps through the night. I'm very glad we did things the way we did, but would not rush moving my child from his/her crib if my child liked sleeping in the crib and wasn't climbing out.

We moved our daughter at 21 months because our son was outgrowing the bassinet. She did fine! We were moving her to a full size bed that had been our guest bed. We started by moving just the top mattress to her room (b/c it is a tall bed) and leaving the crib in her room. She had no desire to sleep in the crib anymore. She never really roamed the house. a month or so after the move, she started peaking out at bedtime. But it was just a short phase. We lucked out big time. My son is now becoming a daredevil and I fear moving him to a big kid bed (he's 17 months). At least he cannot open doors yet. ; )

We moved our son at 9 months. He was diving out of the crib so it was time to move him to a toddler bed and lower to the floor!

Diving out of the crib at 9 months??? That's crazy! What an active child!

Our son is very active, but was always content staying in his crib. He never climbed out in the three years he was in it. We converted it to a toddler bed when he turned three and got him a twin bed about six months later.

He likes to come out a lot when we put him to bed now and I sometimes wish he were still in the crib at 3 1/2. Ha!:)
