Breastfeeding Multiples Can Be Done!

By Rachael
BBA Contributor, Mother of Triplets

Of course, breastfeeding isn't possible for everyone. Often it is an incredibly personal choice a new mother has to make and it is one that needs full support of family and friends. If you choose to go with formula for your multiples' early needs, there are a lot of wonderful benefits to doing so. But if breastfeeding your multiples is something that you would like to do, it can be done. In fact, I was successfully able to pump for/breastfeed my triplets for 14 ½ months.

After a lot of trial and error in the beginning, I realized some very important things…

1) Invest in a good quality pump, preferably a hospital grade pump. If you cannot afford to purchase a hospital grade pump, they are available to rent through your hospital or other locations such as medical device stores. They are often covered by insurance, so check with your carrier prior to renting or buying one.

2) Pump or nurse regularly (and avoid supplementing as best you can) in the beginning. If you nurse, do so on demand and put the babies to the breast each and every time they are hungry. It will likely be rough with constant feedings, but that is their way of increasing your milk production. If you stick with it, it will be over in a few days! If you pump, do so every 2-3 hours around the clock for the first few weeks, then every 2-3 hours during the day, with 4-5 hour stretches at night. Make sure you vary the times that you pump as well. The body operates on a supply and demand schedule, so the more you pump or nurse the more milk you will make.

3) A baby is far more effective at extracting milk from the breast than a pump, so put the babies to the breast as often as possible!

4) Drink plenty of liquids. Seriously, this is probably one of the most important things you can do. If you are dehydrated, logic would indicate that you will not be able to make as much liquid.

5) Eat plenty of calories. This is also one of the most important things you can do. Your body needs the energy provided by calories (and fat) to make the milk your babies need.

6) Get plenty of rest. I know, something that is so difficult in those first few months, but your body is working hard to make milk so you need to let it rest. Let things go (it is only temporary) and sleep when the babies are sleeping.

7) If someone offers to help, accept it! Let them come cuddle the babies while you get some shut eye or pitch in around the house. Whatever you do, don't fall into the trap of thinking you can do it all or you will be overwhelmed and exhausted in no time at all!

8) Preemies can nurse. Although it is usually a more difficult beginning, they will likely eventually get the hang of it around their original due date. Persistence is key! Keep putting your preemies to the breast, starting slowly at first and gradually adding in more sessions as they get stronger. Also, until your babies are nursing like pros, make sure that you pump after each nursing because it is likely that you will need to help stimulate your milk production.

9) Be willing to be flexible. There may come a time when you realize that your body just isn't able to produce enough milk for your growing babies' needs. If you reach that point, don't be discouraged. You can continue to pump and give your baby a mix of breast milk and formula.

10) If you decide to call it quits, there is no shame. Both you and your baby have to enjoy the experience for it to be worthwhile! It was a difficult road at first, and I was armed with a lot of inaccurate and misleading advice, but I stuck with it and the experience turned out to be quite fulfilling to me and my babies. In fact, when my babies stopped nursing and I returned my pump I was sad. It signaled the end of my babies being babies and their transformation into full-fledged toddlers.

Blog Hopping: The Pram is Dead, Long Live the Pram

:: If you are not familiar with what a pram is, you may want to start here.

By Emma
BBA Contributor

My old pram fell apart and it was the happiest day of my life. We never liked each other - that pram made sure I was miserable every day of my life and I made sure I kicked it at least once in the morning and twice in the evening.

It took me about three months of insisting to get Eric to ride in it and even then I never left the house without the baby sling. Many times he would decide he was fed up with the pram and I had no choice but to pop him into the sling. Otherwise he would scream the whole way home.

That pram had small plastic wheels and they made every little bump feel like a BUMP. It was so difficult to steer - both hands (my rock-climbing hands!) weren’t enough. Getting on and off the sidewalk was a pain. I had to lift the whole damn thing. The hood easily came off, and when it did, it fell right on the babies’ head. If, God forbid, I would put anything in the under-seat basket, the pram would start to behave like a sinking ship.

So thank you, my old pram - you showed me what a real pram needs to look like, what features it must have and what it should and shouldn’t do. Thanks to you, I now own a pram that I love because it makes my life so much easier!

Blog Hopping: The Ride Home

By Katie
BBA Contributor

I just had to share pictures of the ride home. On the way to Washington, the main problem that we had with the kids was that Karleigh kept poking the little ones in they eyes. Needless to say, they didn't like that very much. So...my parents came up with this cardboard divider so that Karleigh couldn't get to the little kids.

A few hours in to the drive, she heard Savannah and called out, "Savannah, where are you?" It was pretty funny. We thought the drive would be better if the kids were all asleep so, we decided to leave at 8:00 on Thursday night. Unfortunately, Karleigh didn't get the memo about sleeping all night in the car...so...none of us got any sleep, but we made it home safe and last night I slept from 8:00 at night to 11:00 this morning!!!

We had so much fun in Washington. It made me so grateful (for the millionth time) for the family that I have. My parents bought all of the kids these little toys to take home. They all sang different song so we heard the ABC song at least 100 times on the way home!

Blog Hopping: The Bow Fight

By Katie
BBA Contributor

We're past the year mark, and still no hair. I've had a few people ask me lately if she is a boy or girl. I just have to laugh and hope her hair grows in soon because the bows aren't working out anymore.

The weirdest thing happened a few weeks ago and it kind of freaked me out. I was walking out of Walmart with Savannah in the cart. This older - and when I say older I mean much, much older, like I'm hoping that he was somewhat senile - gentleman stopped me by grabbing my arm.

Um...freaky, please...don't touch. It got weirder though. He started rubbing my back, while he was rubbing his chest (his shirt was unbuttoned a few buttons) with his other hand, and he asked me if Savannah was MY LITTLE BROTHER. Huh? Never got that one before. I was so confused that for a minute I didn't know what to say. Um, no, this is my DAUGHTER!

Yikes.

By this point, Shera was pulling my arm because she was creeped out by all of the rubbing that was STILL going on. Then, he asked me if Shera was my MOM.

Uh...we gotta go.... We've been told all our lives that she looks like the older sister, but wow...wow!

Anyway, this shirt might have come in handy that day, although I'm thinking probably not!

Blog Hopping: Drama Queen

By Aimee Ash
BBA Contributor/Mother of Twin Drama Queens

One of the first questions people ask about my one-year-old twin girls is if their personalities alike. The truth is, I'm not sure they could be more different. Lilly is most definitely our diva and has been since birth. Her "fake cough" came when I had a cough and I was noticing that she was faking a sympathy cough. Her grandma started asking how her cough was and this video is what it has turned into. My husband fears this dramatic streak will only get worse as she gets older.

Blog Hopping: Lil Piggie

By Barb
BBA Contributor

I just have to share this hilarious story from dinner the other night. First, some background. In the past month, Sarah has picked up a bad habit of stuffing her mouth full of food, gagging, then spitting it all out all over the place (there goes the image of my well-behaved, good-mannered toddlers! Busted!).

We often tell her to take one bite at a time, chew, and swallow before taking another bite. Once in a while, we'll tell her not to be a piggy or rude. The other night at dinner, both kids were devouring two of their favorite meal items: zucchini and tater tots (OMG! I have to do an entire extra zuc just for them and they usually end up eating more than we do! They love that stuff!).

Sarah had finished her first helping of her veggies and asked for more. Jacob, realizing his sister was getting something he wasn't, tried Sarah's approach and shoved what was on his plate in his mouth (picture chipmunk cheeks full of tots and zucchini). Sarah watched him do this, giggled and said something I couldn't quite understand. As Jacob tried to ask for "more," but struggled to talk with a mouth full of food, Sarah again said something to Jacob (sounded like what she'd just said, but I still couldn't understand her) and giggled.

I asked her what she was telling him and she looked at me. She looked at Jacob. And she went "oink oink!" (although they do it as a snort like you imagine a pig sounds). She had called her brother a PIG! Can it get any funnier??

Blog Hopping: Order of Baby Teeth

By Emma
BBA Contributor

Did you know that baby teeth have an order of appearance? I sure didn’t, until I found this picture explaining how and when babies get teeth:

First of all the teeth appear in pairs. Pair numbered 1-1 comes first, then the pair numbered 2-2 and so on. There is also a time frame for teeth: the first four pairs erupt in the first year, pairs 5 and 6 from 12 to 18 months, pairs 7 and 8 from 18 to 24 months, and pairs 9 and 10 after the baby is two-years-old.

I think this chart is great! Eric is teething and in so much pain and I find it very hard to comfort him. So naturally it made me wonder if there is light at the end of the tunnel. Well, there is – he is 8-months-old and we’ve got the first three pairs, which means one more to go and we’re done for this year!

Blog Hopping: A Very Persistent Little Girl

By Katie
BBA Contributor

Savannah is a very persistent little girl. Once she gets her mind on something, she isn't easily distracted! Unfortunately, like most babies, she isn't very coordinated! I can only imagine the struggle that occurred as she was trying to get her arm out of her shirt. Unfortunately, I wasn't there to witness it, I found her like this when I went to get her out of bed this morning. She's obviously quite proud!

Blog Hopping: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

By Sheryl
BBA Contributor
Nanny and Soon-to-Be Mom

This week I've noticed a slight improvement in how tired I am. I can now make it through the day without a nap. I'd still really like one, but it's not so vital anymore. The bad news is that because I don't just fall into bed at night anymore, it's harder for me to get to sleep.

Last night I went to bed at 10:30 and didn't get to sleep until after 1:00. I got up every 10 - 15 minutes to pee, and every time it was as if I hadn't just gone. It was very annoying and I would have just slept on the toilet if I could have gotten comfortable. I was tired enough to fall asleep, I just always had to pee.

I'm very cranky if I don't get enough sleep. Some people have said that this is preparation for getting up several times a night with the baby. That's total bullshit. It's like saying that dieting is preparation for starvation. Or the cure for lack-of-sleep is practicing lack-of-sleep. With all of the adventure vacations we've had I do think that having some experience with sleep deprivation is important and very helpful to get through an event, but you never practice that leading up to the event, that's just stupid.

Anyways, hopefully I'll adjust soon. I'm sure Jonathan is hoping so too; he slept on the couch last night simply so he could get some sleep.

Blog Hopping: Digital Cameras at Show-and-Tell

By Pamela Hilton
BBA Contributor

During my time as a preschool teacher, I would have show and tell on Fridays. This was a time for the children to bring in toys from home to show their classmates, and then everyone would have an opportunity to share their toys with each other. I was surprised to see several of the kids bring in real digital cameras for show and tell. But as I inspected these digital cameras, I realized the genius behind them.

For starters, the design of the cameras was brilliant. They were heavy, sturdy, and brightly colored. They featured wide handles on either side and had only a few simple buttons. The pixel quality was obviously not great, but that doesn’t matter to children. They get such joy out of taking their own pictures. And what’s better, these cameras cost less than a hundred dollars – sometimes as little as fifty dollars.

A child taking their own digital images is a concept that makes sense on many levels. Children always seem to be excited about taking part in anything that identifies them with adults that they look up to, and this includes using any kind of electronics. Children are also notorious for their unquenchable sense of curiosity, and the ability to take pictures helps to nurture this priceless quality.

It’s a great way to support the love of photography and art, and give the child a sense of importance. And think of how great they will feel when they see an album of pictures they have taken!

Blog Hopping: Toe Lickin' Good

By Carla
BBA Contributor

We all went out to Brian's employers' 20th anniversary picnic today. The theme was Harry Potter, so they had cool things going on. There were owls, falcons, a fortune teller and a magic show. They also played quittage (non-flying of course), people came dressed in costumes and the decorations were cool.

It has rained a ton here the last week and some of the country roads were flooded. There was one place I got out to test how high the water was before we drove over it because we could not see the road - crazy. The farm where the picnic was held was pretty wet. They tried to help things out by putting straw down, but it was still messy. We all left with very messy feet and we had to stop by the store on the way home. Brian ran in while I sat in the van with the boys. I hear weird sucking sounds from the back seat. I guess Gareth wanted his toes clean.

Blog Hopping: Perfect Babies

By Emma
BBA Contributor

Don’t you just hate the parents of those perfect babies? You know, the ones that sleep through the night, eat without making a mess, never have bad days, smile all the time and quietly play on their own with their little toys.

Don’t you just hate the people that say to you: “Your baby is waking up for feeds at night? Oh, that’s awful, you poor thing - at this age he must sleep through!”

And how about the people who say: “By this age he must be able to sit upright and feed himself with a spoon, my children did!”

Well, news flash – my baby has no idea about this “MUST” word, he has no clue about all the things that according to some people he “must” do. And you know what? I think that I will erase that word from my vocabulary as well. My baby has the right to develop in his own pace and this word just gets in the way!

Going Green with Triplets

By Jennifer Jordan
BBA Contributor

With Triplets we've had to cut down on our spending. A LOT. It made no sense for me to return to work after having the babies; what I made would have ONLY paid for daycare for Triplets. Living off of one income is hard. Very hard. Money was always an issue, just not a big one. Two miscarriages, TONS of testing, five months of fertility treatments, triplets and one income later, it matters now more than anything.

The two miscarriages and fertility treatments really racked up our bills. While looking into how to cut our costs, I found out Going Green was the way to go. We chose to cloth diaper our triplets and, luckily, I already had most of our cloth diapers.

I was so overwhelmed when they came home (after 38 LONG days in the NICU) I just couldn't deal with cloth diapers. Then my husband ran to the store at about 8:45 at night (and everything in our small town closes at nine) and spent about $50 on diapers. They lasted less than a week. That was it. I wasn't going to throw away that kind of money. We cloth diapered from then on and are still going strong. With the help of my mother, we spent about $600-800 on diapers and they will last until potty training.

I also found out that cleaning Green cut our costs a lot. Vinegar cleans anything and has many uses. It is cheap at about $.99 a gallon. Add in some baking soda, borax and soap and there you have it! These ingredients can also be used to make your own laundry detergent. I found Clean House, Clean Planet and it goes into detail about why we should cut out commerical cleaners, not only for health reasons, but for money savings. No more harsh chemical smells in my CLEAN house.

To cut costs even more, we hang dry everything and made the switch to energy efficent lightbulbs. By simply not using our dryer, the power bill dropped almost $50 a month. Going Green does not have to mean spending a lot, but it sure means saving a lot!

Surviving the First Year with Triplets

By Rachael
BBA Contributor

I am proud to say that we survived our first year with triplets. Although the individual moments were often less than graceful, it has been one incredible and amazing journey. During my pregnancy, I spent four weeks on bedrest at home, then was admitted to the hospital where I spent the remaining eight weeks until delivery day.

Needless to say, The Peaches (as we so lovingly call them) were born under an umbrella of fear and apprehension - especially since two of the three were in distress due to complications from Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. When they made the decision to do an emergency c-section, we had no idea what to expect. But each baby came out with a tiny little cry. The last one born took an extra few (and particularly frightening) moments before she finally cried. They did incredibly well in the NICU, defying their doctor's expectations and sailing through each goal set for them. And they came home long before we expected. Of course, once they were home, sleep deprivation hit in full force and we wandered around in a fog until they were about 10 months old. Then the fog began to lift and clarity set in.

It was then that I was finally able to take a few moments to look back over our long journey through the previous year. I sat back in awe as I realized the sheer volume of what we have to be thankful for: three tiny, precious lives. There were many moments throughout the pregnancy and after their birth when we had no idea if our babies would survive long enough to come home, much less celebrate their 1st birthday. But they did. They did more than just survive, they flourished. And now we have three perfect one-year-olds who are toddling and talking, laughing and learning, giggling and growing (in addition to their just as perfect big sister).

The Miracle Blanket: Truly a Miracle

By Nicki Glenn
BBA Contributor

As the parent of a 23-month-old boy, I get asked the same question over and over by my friends who are expecting their first child. They all want to know my top five things I would not live without during the first 6 months with a new baby. Without fail, my number one item is The Miracle Blanket.

I first heard about this blanket on Babycenter.com. I knew a little about swaddling but not enough to invest the money for this blanket. But as I looked at TMB website, I discovered their blanket was no ordinary blanket. I was worried about investing in something that may not work for my baby, but then I discovered the deal-maker – a money back LIFETIME guarantee!

I ordered my blanket and began using it the night we brought Jonah home from the hospital. I can honestly say that sleep was NEVER an issue for our baby. This truly was a miracle for two parents who love their sleep!

I had many friends call and question me about the blanket because our babies were the same age and there was a vast difference in the amount of sleep they were getting. Each of them ordered the blanket and within one or two nights they were seeing sleep patterns increase by three and four hours. If you have a baby, this is a must-have item!

Baby Etiquette Week: Day 2
How Much & When to Give Baby Gifts

It's Day 2 of "Baby Etiquette Week." If you missed Day 1: "Your Friend Is Pregnant," check it out here.

How much should you spend on a new baby gift?
You will want to consider how many gifts you are buying and whether you are throwing the shower? While some baby gifts may be small, they are still costly. Pick a budget and stick with it throughout the course of the next nine months.

When do you give a new baby gift?
This entirely depends on the parents' religious beliefs and customs. If the parents believe it is bad luck to receive a gift prior to the birth, you CANNOT send a gift. However if giving gifts is fair game, you can give a gift at anytime. The only time it is absolutely required for you to give a gift is if there is a baby shower.

Baby Etiquette Week: Day 1
Your Friend is Pregnant

This week is "Baby Etiquette Week" on BabyBlogAddict.com. Thanks to Lisa Friedman, co-founder of SomeoneSpoilMe.com in Beverly Hills, CA, for being a guest contributor this week.

Baby Etiquette Week: Day 1 – Your Friend Is Pregnant

While you may not be the one getting larger each month, deliberating on the relative merits of the Bugaboo versus the Stokke and running (wobbling) from OBGYN appointment to Prenatal Yoga, you are still under a lot of pressure. Your friend is pregnant, therefore you need to worry about what gifts to buy, when to give them, how much to spend and how to throw a baby shower. Don’t get overwhelmed, you have nine months to save and plan. You will get through this stressful (ahem wonderful) time.

What are the best new baby gifts?
This is not stressful- anything you buy will be absolutely adorable (everything is cute when it’s that tiny) and will be extremely helpful (most people do not have extra onesies lying around). Your biggest concern should be choosing pink, blue or green (aka gender neutral), the size (3-6 months is key) and what type of cotton (if it’s an eco-friendly baby, opt for organic cotton). New baby gifts for all genders and environmental dispositions are blankets & burp cloths, clothes & shoes, gear (high chairs, strollers, etc), toys or silver collectibles. Many gifts can be personalized with the baby’s name, which adds an extra special touch.
