On this St. Patrick's Day, the staff at Parenting.com has compiled a list of its favorite Irish baby names. Bedelia, Fallon and Maeve are some of the girls' names. For boys, a few of the faves are Callum, Killian and Seamus.

You could never accuse Erykah Badu of being boring or traditional. The singer confirms that she has named her newborn daughter ... drumroll, please ... Mars Merkaba. And how did she communicate this to the world? On the Twitter website, of course!
A baby born Tuesday in Miami, Florida has been named after the 44th president of the United States.
Barack Isaiah Cowan came into the world at 9:39 a.m. EST weighing seven pounds and five ounces.
The mother says they decided to name the baby Barack last year, after Barack Obama won the election. He was actually due last month, but held out until inauguration day.
There are several ways to get started, and this article suggests several good ideas. Among them: brainstorm, get creative and compromise.
What can we expect this year? Parents magazine online predicts that the trend of naming kids after places will continue in 2009. They've placed Brooklyn, Milan, Houston, Aspen, and Geneva on the list of "jet-setting" baby names.
The Web site also thinks parents will look to nature for inspiration: River, Blue, Sunny, and Rain for boys and Moon, Lotus, Ocean, and Dawn for girls.

Harlow Winter Kate Madden and Caleb James Bice are the best celebrity baby names of 2008, according to a poll taken on the popular website BabyNames.com. Among the worst? For girls, it was Jagger Joseph Blue Goldberg. For boys, Bronx Mowgli Wentz gets the prize.

A columnist for TIME magazine wants your help naming his baby. Here's an excerpt:
"As a pretentious, self-important yuppie hipster, I thought it was a great idea to pay a baby-name consultant, an occupation created just a year ago. For $35, I got 12 name suggestions from Jennifer Moss at BabyNames.com that included four names we were already considering: Elijah, Jude, Dashiell and Edison, which is particularly weird because we totally made up the name Edison, since it's the town I'm from in New Jersey. My main concern with these is that they'll all get my son beaten up. But Moss said, "When we've done our surveys, people say, 'I was teased about being Anna.' Kids will tease about anything if they don't like you. Don't worry about it. Unless it rhymes with a body part." Which, sadly, ruled out my favorite choice: Smesticles Stein."
Eva Mendes isn't happy with fellow actress and close friend Salma Hayek for stealing her favorite baby name. Mendes was reportedly stunned when she discovered the 42-year-old actress had called her daughter Valentina Paloma, who she welcomed into the world in September 2007.
Singer Lisa Marie Presley and her husband Michael Lockwood have chosen names for their twin babies. People magazine reports the girls are named Finley and Harper. The twins were born last week and weighed 5lbs., 15oz. and 5lbs., 2oz.
Mark Ciptak says he went behind his wife's back and listed their newborn daughter's name as "Sarah McCain Palin" on her birth-certificate application because "we are strong supporters of that ticket," according to the Kingsport Times-News in Tennessee.
"She wanted Ava Grace. So, with a clear conscience, even though I know I was sort of going around her back, I kind of secretively put down Sarah McCain Palin instead of Ava Grace on another set of forms that I acquired from the front desk," he tells WBIR-TV. "And as we were walking out of the hospital, I went ahead and gave those to the nurse."
Ciptak says told his wife about the switch the next day, while they were at the doctor's office. He says she was speechless. "I felt a lot of cold air coming from her way," Ciptak tells the station. (via USA Today)

Zimbabwean swimmer and world record holder, Kirsty Coventry, has been called a "national treasure" by the head of the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee and "golden girl" by the Zimbabwean President. She brought her native Zimbabwe their first Olympic medal ever during the 2004 Olympics.
That prompted Zimbabweans to start naming their babies after her. Several newborn babies were named Kirsty, some with the middle name Coventry, others were even called "Goldmedal" or "Threemedals" to celebrate her Athens haul.
Since she has won a few more medals in Beijing, I'm thinking that there may be more Kirsty's born in Zimbabwe again this year...or maybe even a "Fourmedals."

It's no secret that celebrity baby names have been a little, uh, out there for a number of years. From Nicholas Cage's son Kal-El Coppola to Jason Lee's son Pilot Inspektor to Geri Halliwell's daughter Bluebell Madonna (pictured), there is no shortage of craziness.
While official figures show that old-fashioned names are still among the most popular choices, some classic names remain firmly stuck in the history books. Norman and Gertrude top a list of names that have fallen out of fashion over the last 100 years, according to research for the mother and baby website Gurgle.com. While Ruby and Olivia are all the rage, Edna, Ethel and Irene are strictly off limits.
Other unloved entries on the list of endangered names include Clifford, Frank, Arnold, Leonard, Ada, Agnes, Elsie and Mabel.

It reminds me a lot of those trendy baby shower invitations. This ticker is shown here with a blue background, but it's also available in pink, green or gold.

Actress Halle Berry's decision to call her daughter Nahla Ariela Aubry had some people perplexed, but baby experts said it mirrored a trend for unusual names which has helped create a new profession -- baby name consultant.
Baby Names Country is a site dedicated to baby names and their meanings and origins.
I thought it was fun to play with the Baby Names Advisor in the right column. I put in my name and my husband's and it recommended Triston for a boy and Brynn for a girl. I also put in my parents' names and it recommended Regina. I'm glad my parents went with Jennifer instead. I feel a lot more like a Jennifer than a Regina.
As you are looking through the list, you can even add names to your personal favorite names list and then print it out to help you to make a decision before the baby arrives. The printed list would be great to add to your baby's memory book, so they can look back one day (and probably laugh) at some of the other names you considered for them.
